HOW DOES IT WORK?
Cosmetic laser treatments reverse the signs of aging and sun-damaged skin by stimulating collagen production and promoting tissue tightening.
AM I A CANDIDATE?
If your skin is showing signs of aging, then you are a candidate for laser treatment. Your practitioner can help you determine your specific needs.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO TREATMENT?
Laser anti-aging treatment should cause only minimal discomfort. Any redness, swelling or puffiness that occurs can be gone within a few days, if not a few hours.
HOW MANY LASER ANTI-AGING TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?
Results vary with each case. Patients may require anywhere from two to six treatments to achieve desired results. Each session will last from 15 to 30 minutes.
HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST?
Just like the aging process itself, this varies from person to person. However, if you take steps to protect and preserve your freshly laser rejuvenated skin – such as using SPF sunscreen, facial cleansers and creams – the results will last longer.
WHAT IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
Laser hair removal is a procedure by which hair is removed from the body by utilizing a long pulse laser. The laser works by disabling hairs that are in their active growth cycle at the time of treatment by using laser light to attack the root of your hair follicles. Since other hairs will enter their growth cycle at different times, several treatments are necessary to disable all of the follicles in a given area.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
Laser works best on pale skin and dark, coarse hair. The closer you are to this combination, the better and quicker your results will generally be. Alexandrite Lasers (such as our Candela GentleLase) work best on light-colored skin. The Nd Yag laser was developed to safely treat darker pigmented skin. Our Candela Yag can treat darker skin types both safely and effectively. To be a candidate for laser hair removal, your hair must have some pigment in it. As long as your hair in the area to be treated has at least some brown in it, (laser won’t work on white, grey, blonde, or red hair), then you could be a candidate for laser hair removal. There are other contraindications for having laser hair removal done, but they are usually temporary, such as actively taking sun-sensitizing medications (ie. antibiotics, Accutane) or using topical sun-sensitizing products such as Retina-A (for a week before a treatment)
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LASER AND ELECTROLYSIS?
Both Laser and Electrolysis work to attack the roots of your hair. Laser emits wavelengths of light designed to be absorbed by the pigment in the hair (melanin). Each laser pulse will cover an area as large as 18mm (about the size of a nickel). Electrolysis uses an electric current to attack the root of your hair one follicle at a time. Both methods work great, but laser can treat large areas in a short period of time. Electrolysis should be used to treat small areas such as eyebrows, and for hair that has no dark pigment in it.
IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL PAINFUL?
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but most people experience only a minor discomfort. Many people describe the pain to be similar to that of a soft rubber band snap. Most people do not require an anesthetic cream, but it can be used on some of the more sensitive areas. Although waxing and laser have an entirely different feeling, most people would agree that waxing is much more painful then laser.
HOW DO I DETERMINE MY FITZPATRICK SKIN TYPE?
In order to determine which laser will be both the safest and most effective, we must first determine your Fitzpatrick Skin Type.
- TYPE I: Highly sensitive, always burns, never tans.
Example: Red hair with freckles or Albino
- TYPE II: Very sun sensitive, burns easily, tans minimally.
Example: Fair-skinned, fair-haired Caucasians
- TYPE III: Sun sensitive skin, sometimes burns, slowly tans to light brown.
Example: Darker Caucasians, European mix
- TYPE IV: Minimally sun sensitive, burns minimally, always tans to moderate brown.
Example: Mediterranian, European, Asian, Hispanic, American Indian
- TYPE V: Sun-insensitive skin, rarely burns, tans well.
Example: Hispanics, Afro-American, Middle Eastern
- TYPE VI: Sun-insensitive, never burns, deeply pigmented.
Example: Afro-American, African, Middle Eastern
DO I NEED MULTIPLE LASER TREATMENTS?
Because your hair grows in stages, only a portion of your hair will be in the deepest growing stage. In order for a hair to be killed it must be in the deepest growing stage. For this reason, to receive your optimal results most people will need a minimum of six treatments.
CAN I LASER WHEN I’M PREGNANT?
It is our policy to not do any laser treatments on anyone who is pregnant. We will be happy to wax you as a temporary solution during your pregnancy.
CAN I SHAVE?
Because laser penetrates through the skin to attack the root of your hair, it is fine to be completely shaved before a laser treatment. Unlike waxing, in which you need ten days of growth so the hair can get long enough to be pulled out.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER A LASER TREATMENT?
On average, it will feel similar to a mild sunburn. On most people the redness will subside within 2-3 hours (occasionally lasting for a day or two). Your hair will take about two weeks to fall out and leave you with smooth hair free skin.
CAN I LASER AFTER BEING IN THE SUN?
You want to avoid the sun as much as you can throughout your laser procedure. Most importantly, you get no sun right before or right after your treatment.
